The automaker, Toyota Motor Corp. said Thursday it has begun manufacturing four-cylinder engines at a subsidiary in Huntsville, Alabama, with the aim of meeting expected market demand and "increasing the autonomy" of its operations in North America by localizing production.
The addition of four-cylinder engines to the lineup at Toyota Motor Manufacturing Alabama Inc. represents new investment of about $172 million, or approximately 13.2 billion yen, and about 300 new jobs when combined with another Toyota subsidiary, Bodine Aluminum Inc., which produces the engines' cylinder heads and blocks.
The 2500 cc and 2700 cc engines will be installed in the all-new 2012 Camry, Highlander, Sienna and Venza vehicles, Toyota said. The Huntsville plant, which also produces V6 and V8 engines for trucks and sport utility vehicles, has an annual production capacity of about 216,000 four-cylinder engines.
At a line-off ceremony in Huntsville on Thursday, Toyota's Executive Vice President Atsushi Niimi said the addition to the production line furthers the Japanese automaker's commitment to localizing production.
